Halloween party  (Nov 14, 2007)

By Marcia Fishman

The Malibu East children's Halloween party was another roaring success. There were approximately 30 children who attended this year and they had an absolutely wonderful time. They decorated pumpkins, cupcakes and masks and did face painting. There were plenty of games for the kids to play as well. All the children were decked out in absolutely wonderful costumes - from a dinosaur to a princess, a pumpkin, a cheerleader, an Indian princess, a rock star, Harry Potter and "twins." The finale, as always, was the mummy wrap! Of course, it would have not been a success without Chris and the helpful hand of her son, Carlos. Also, Parsha, Wade and Merkal, as always, came down to help set up, and their work was really appreciated. In order to continue having these great events for the children of Malibu East, we need parents to help plan them. Please leave your name at the doorman's station addressed to Marcia.  (more...)

2007 Easter Egg Hunt  (Apr 11, 2007)

By: Christine Barragan and Marcia Fishman

The MECA Parent's Committee hosted an "Easter Egg Hunt" party in the Windjammer Room on Saturday, April 7th.

Even though the weather was freezing outside, it felt like spring was in the air! The room was decorated with flowers. Balloons, bunnies and plastic eggs were everywhere. About 20 of our young residents and their parents enjoyed spending time together and celebrating the holiday. The kids colored Easter eggs and decorated their own cupcakes. Even though we didn't play any games this year, there was a special energy in the room. Everyone had fun and the refreshments were delicious. We had fresh fruit, vegetables with dip and Easter Bunny cookies. The pink lemonade gave a "springtime feel"! When the official call was announced, the "Easter Egg Hunt" began, and everyone scattered to find the plastic eggs. Some eggs were hard to find and no corner of the room was overlooked! The party ended with goodie bags for everyone to take home and remember the day.

A special Thank You is given to Art, Carlos and Parsa for helping set-up, and staying until the end. They are part of our "party" crew and we couldn't have done it without them! We were also grateful to Meg and Yu, our guests, for offering their kind assistance. We were so lucky to have them as our guests!

The Parent's Committee thanks everyone who attended and we hope to see you at our other events. We welcome all parents to join our "crew." We would love to have you!

2006 Halloween Party  (Oct 30, 2006)

By: Marcia Fishman, Chris Barragan and Beth Robinson

Another year and another great Halloween party hosted by the Parents Committee. Approximately 25 children and a few parents had a wonderful time.

The Windjammer Room was decorated and there were plenty of activities for the children to enjoy. They decorated cupcakes and pumpkins and had face painting. Maya was the mad scientist who helped the kids make flubber and slime.

The kids enjoyed a Halloween twister game and played pass-the-eyeball and pin the nose on the witch. Of course, there was the annual mummy wrap! Even the parents participated and were happily wrapped up!

The children and parents enjoyed the food and beverages provided by the committee and, at the end of the party, all received goodie bags.

The children did not want to leave and were already looking forward to next year.

A special Thank You goes to Maya for helping us and staying until the end, as well as Mirko and Parsa for coming down early to help us decorate the Windjammer Room! Also, Carlos needs to be thanked for attending our planning meeting and giving the committee ideas he thought the children would like - and they did.

By: Sandy Chaet

On Thursday, Oct. 26 the American Lung Association was here at Malibu East to give flu and pneumonia shots. Eighty-one people participated. This year 20 people from Malibu also came to get shots. There was a steady flow of people with the biggest crowd in the beginning. Thank you to the American Lung Association for coming here yearly!  (more...)

Fourth Annual Winter Door Decorating Contest Results  (Dec 24, 2005)

By: Jack Winans

Our door-decorating contest took into account every decoration that was remotely a "winter holiday motif." We did not consider spring, summer or fall decorations or anything that was placed on the floor. We also eliminated package bows and magazine cutouts. There are many decorations hanging that were interesting but not relevant to the holiday season. The decorations counted included wreaths made out of rope, twigs, dried flowers, evergreen and cloth. We found bows in every shape and size, with some hanging almost to the floor. Snowmen, stockings, Santas, calendars, horns, bells, dolls, pinecones and poinsettias were the elements of many decorations. Some units had multiple decorations and some floors had none at all. 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 18, seven days before Christmas, was our cutoff date. Units decorated after this date may not have been judged. All judges asked to remain anonymous.   (more...)

2004 Halloween party  (Nov 7, 2004)

By: Chris Barragan

The MECA Parent's Committee hosted the annual Halloween party in the Windjammer Room on October 30. In the past, the party has been one of the most heavily attended and this year proved to be another "ghoulish" success. More than 30 children plus adults came to enjoy a variety of snacks, desserts and Halloween fun. Games such as pin the nose on the witch, mummy wrap, pass the apple and spooky songs freeze dance were a big hit! Everyone showed their artistic talents by decorating their own pumpkin. Face painting with a Halloween flare was all the rage. For those who "dare to enter," a "mad scientist" laboratory was constructed by the talented older kids who showed great imagination. Our newer residents mingled and met other families in the building and I'm sure numbers were exchanged to set up play dates in the future. If you didn't attend, you missed a "haunting" good time!

Endangered Edgewater exhibit extended through July (May 4, 2004)

The Edgewater Historical Society presents an exhibit entitled "Endangered Edgewater" at the Edgewater Historical Society Museum, 5358 N. Ashland (Ashland and Balmoral). The Museum is open every Saturday from 1-4 p.m. and on some Sundays. Please call 773-506-4849 for availability or for more information about the Society.

The "Endangered Edgewater" exhibit focuses on the few remaining single-family homes in J.L. Cochran's original Edgewater development, from Foster Avenue on the south to Devon Avenue on the north. These homes were built between 1892 and 1916 and are the only remaining historical evidence of Cochran's plan to create a town here. They are endangered because, in 1957, most of the land in this area was zoned for high-rise construction.

In the 1960's, many of the original homes were demolished and replaced by four-plus-ones. For the past 40 years, the remaining homes have been lived in and repaired by their owners. Since the year 2000, nine of these homes have been slated for demolition or have already been demolished. Twelve of the remaining homes are on Winthrop and six are on Kenmore. Two of them have been purchased by Loyola University, which does not intend to restore them.

On the 5400 block of Winthrop, one group of homes is representative of the kind of housing in the first Edgewater development. 5416 was built in 1902; 5422 was built in 1896; 5428 was built in 1904; 5430-32 was built in 1892. These homes have had some work done on them but have not been restored. It is the hope of the Edgewater Historical Society that they will be preserved as an important part of our community's history.

CTA proposes improvements to Lake Shore bus routes (Jun 16, 2003)

The CTA has announced proposed improvements to "Lake Shore Corridor" bus routes (including "our" #136 and #147). A 180-day experiment will begin August 31 and will be evaluated throughout the six month trial. According to the CTA announcement, "Customers using these routes will experience improved travel time to and from the Loop, new express service to downtown, improved east-west service connections, expanded express service hours and fewer transfers throughout their trips."

The most significant proposed change (for "us") is to the #147 bus which will now operate on weekdays and Saturdays until 1 a.m. and on Sundays until 8 p.m.

The following paragraphs relating to "our" Sheridan Road bus routes were extracted from the press release:

The #136 Sheridan/LaSalle Express will be modified to operate on Clarendon instead of Marine Drive between Lawrence and Montrose. Trips will operate express on Outer Lake Shore Drive between Irving Park and East Wacker Drive. Buses will proceed west on Wacker, making stops at Michigan and State, south on LaSalle and west on Adams to Wacker.

New Sunday service and later weekday/Saturday service will be provided on the #147 Outer Drive Express route, which will operate from the Howard 'L' station to Michigan/Congress, running express on Lake Shore Drive from Foster to Oak/Michigan, and making local stops on Michigan from Delaware to Congress. Weekday and Saturday service will be extended to 1 a.m. #147 buses will run from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. on Sundays/holidays.

#151 Sheridan will terminate at Devon during hours the #147 is operating. The #147 route will cover all trips between Devon and Howard Monday through Saturday. On Sundays/holidays, the #151 will run all the way to Howard after 8 p.m.

We will leave Malibu East at 8:30 a.m., traveling to the boat in a deluxe motor coach (with bathroom). There will be time for two sessions of gambling and a buffet lunch before leaving Harrah's at 3:00 p.m. We should arrive home at approximately 4:30 p.m., but please note that the bus ride can take 1 to 1-1/2 hours depending on traffic.

The cost for the day is only $10 per person, plus an optional tip for the driver. To make all of this happen, we need at least 30 paid reservations (the bus can accommodate up to 45 people). 2001 MECA Survey Results (Apr 22, 2002)

by Janice Krzesinski and Larry Creter

In 2001 a survey was submitted to the residents for their input regarding satisfaction with life at Malibu East. Thanks to all who took the time and effort to participate! One hundred sixty five completed surveys were returned to the office, many of which included comments and suggestions about the categories presented. The surveys were tallied offsite by an impartial party employed for this purpose.

The following tables are a quantitative summary of the results. In order to calculate each percentage, the "no comment" total was deducted from 165 for the divisor. Your board of directors will address the categories and items that scored less than 85% Very Satisfied/Satisfied. Those items have been assigned to either an appropriate committee, management or the board for review and response to all residents. The "Building Survey" topic will be followed-up on the monthly board meeting agenda until a response is finalized. (Click here to view a "PDF" file of the survey results)

A future, separate report will include recommendations to address any trends in topics summarized from the "Written Comment" section of the survey.
